World Christmas Ornaments History: Unique, Rare, Old Xmas Treasures

World Christmas ornaments’ history goes back over a long time.    According to history, the first, oldest Christmas tree was decorated at Riga city in Latvia, in 1510. Antique Christmas trees were bedecked with uncommon paper flowers, real fruit, wafers and unusual candies. However, there’s the old interesting question; where and who made the first antique Christmas ornaments? World historians don’t have a united answer on this old question. One ancient legend says the first glass Christmas ornaments were made by old German glass-blower Hans Greine in Lauscha in the 16th century. However, many historians are convinced the earliest glass ornaments were really blown in Lauscha in 1847. Anyway, according to history, Germans already had the unique custom of decorating a Christmas tree with real fruit and vegetables in the 16th century.

  Since the 17th century, Germany had been manufacturing rare Xmas decorations for small infrequent parties for sale. There were unique silver-wire ornaments, ornamental glass beads and other uncommon Xmas treasures. German immigrants brought their unique, old tradition of decorating a Christmas tree to North America in the second part of the 18th century. The USA began manufacturing glass Xmas decorations in the late 1930s. The founder of the unusual ornament production in USA was Max Eckhardt. The history shows us the earliest antique Russian New Year ornaments began production in the Klin town in the first part of the 19th century. Those infrequent Russian Xmas treasures were never made in large amounts and were mainly bought for the Russian Imperial Court.

   Manufacturing rare and uncommon Christmas treasures on a mass scale began in the 90s of the 19th century.  German factories exported their unique glass, rare cotton and unusual pressed cardboard Christmas ornaments to many countries of the world. The earliest antique glass ornaments were simple shapes; glass balls and glass beads. But some time later glass-blowing masters began blowing different shapes of glass ornaments, vegetables, fruits, animals, birds, people, figures etc. The 1st World War destroyed the German world leadership of ornament manufacturing.

  Historically, the custom to decorate Christmas trees first came to the British Isles with Queen Charlotte, wife of George III. The Czech Republic had launched its own production of glass ornaments in the 1920s. Rare Czech Christmas decorations had been exported to the USA very successfully. Japan also caught the idea in the 1920s. Japanese Christmas ornaments were not very common but were cheap. 

  Now, antique Xmas ornaments are real treasures, and some unique rarities can cost many hundreds of dollars. So, check out your old family’s Xmas chest again.
