How to Buy Rams Horn Shofar and Be Prepared for Rosh HaShana Jewish New Year
In Jewish religion Shofar takes a very important role – it is being sound at Rosh Ha Shana eve – Jewish New Year – the most important Jewish Holiday. You have probably seen a symbolic picture of old man with long white beard holding the shofar and producing very unique sound. Those pictures are the symbols of Rosh haShana holiday.
Most common shofars are made from ram’s horn. They are available in different sizes – from 10 inch to 25 inch. It is very rare that ram’s horn shofar is larger then that.
But different Jewish diasporas made shofars from different animals . For example Yemenite Jews made shofars from Kudu horn. These shofars referred to as Yemenite shofars. They are much longer than ram’s horn shofar and produce different sound.
There are also shofars made from Gemsbok horn.
As a part of a preparations to Rosh haShana one needs to buy rams horn shofar. It is not so simple considering all the checks needs to be performed while choosing appropriate shofar.
Not every horn can be called shofar. In order to be called Shofar the horn must be manufactured according to Jewish tradition rules . Only then it can be considered kosher and can be called shofar. The procedure of producing kosher shofar passed from father to son from ancient time and remained unchanged till today. The kosher shofar manufacturers mastered a technique of removing the animal odor and polishing it till it will produce unique sound. Kosher Shofar can have a polished or natural finish. Making a kosher shofar is well known art where the Jewish artists cover shofar with silver while inscribing on it the views of Jerusalem. They look very beautiful.
When you buy rams horn shofar always check that the manufacturer has a license to produce kosher shofar given by the Chief Rabbinate. As well the manufacturer needs to put unique seal on shofar which gives official authentication for kosher manufacturing of shofar.
So here is the basic guide which will help you to chose the right shofar for you:
- Choose the shofar type you are after: you should decide whether you want to buy rams horn shofar or yemenite kudu shofar. Their sounds may differ and some people prefer the sound of rams hornshofar whereas other like the deep sound of yemenite kudu shofar. You need to hear both and decide whose sound you like better.
- Choose the shofar size. Rams horn shofars can vary from 10 – 26 inch. And the longer shofar is more expensive it will be. The relation between rams horn shofar legth and their price is exponencial. Yemenite shofars price is directly proportional to their length.
- If you know how to blow it – youcan try to hear its sound. If you do not know to blow shofar you can ask the seller to blow it.
- The shofar and the process of making it must be kosehr i.e. approved by Chief Rabbinate. Othervise it can not be called shofar
- As you buy rams horn shofar you would want to choose its finish type. It can be either natural , where the mouthpiece is polished and the rest of the shofar is natural , or fully polished (see the below pictures)
- In order to make sure there is no odor left from the animal - you can try to smell it.
- The high end of shofar finish is plaing it with sterling silver with inscribed views of Jerusalem , prayers etc. – if you want to order such en enhancemnet you can ask the seller who usually is connected with artists which can do this amazing job.
